North Side
The north side of the house had a
screened-in porch and exterior covered entry into the original
basement, added by Addison Withers. The porch extended the
length of the 1880 addition and included the kitchen, small
foyer, and dining room exterior doors. The porch was in poor
condition and sustained severe water damage. The rain gutters
rotted off the house and water ruined the porch, basement
entry, and back wall of the entry in the Civil War addition.
The header over the basement entry had to be replaced since it
almost entirely rotted away. The back entry wall of the Civil
War addition fell 13" around the doorway from water washing
out the mortar between the stones. (The door framing was
holding up the wall.) This is where there was a hole through
the house from water damage. "Big Man" and Kenny jacked up the
doorway, replaced the stones, and rebuilt the door opening.
They were able to raise the wall 5" and reframe the doorway.
The kitchen door on the north wall was turned into a
window. The small foyer and pantry inside the house was
removed and the area became part of the kitchen.
This side of the house will get a new
addition in the summer of 2004. The addition will include an
interior stairway to the basement, a full bathroom, laundry
room/mud room, and hallway. |
